Corey Waurechen

Corey is a self-taught painter living and working in Toronto, Ontario. His artistic practice works to combine observational studies of familiar scenes with the grandeur of the supernatural and the mythological into what could be called Modern Mythologies; the personal and shared myths that we live in and create for ourselves everyday. Every bit of daily input from the weather, the news, childhood memories, digital media, literature, history, conversations and conflicts all come together to create paintings that bring his personal experiences together with those of the viewer. Corey takes great pleasure in knowing that this practice, like anything worth studying, is never-ending.

I find that I spend a lot of time painting and drawing florals. A practice that would not be possible without my partner keeping a constant supply of fresh flowers in our house. Flowers really are magic. They are subtle and delicate sculptures crafted by Nature
itself. They grow out of the earth coloured with hues that range from impossible
intensity to gentle subdued pastels– vivid and yet hard to capture. They compliment so many of our emotions. The comfort and simple pleasure of flowers can even reach us through feelings as deep as sorrow and great loss– a flower for every occasion. In my artistic practice flowers are meditative. There is much to experience with the brush through the quiet contemplation of painting a Still Life: the dance and movement of the petals, the sturdy pillars of the stems, the interplay of light on a vase, the lacuna of an empty wall. The simple image of a flower is but a universal metaphor to the vast inner workings of the human mind.
