Dayna Schaley

Dayna is a mixed media artist born in the Ottawa Valley who predominately works in sculpture and painting. She studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design University where she obtained her BFA in Drawing and Painting. Her current work explores memory, both forgotten and imagined, texture and space. In her work Dayna looks at nature, shadows, nightmares, reflections, and the space around her. She currently lives in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This current body of sculptural work was born out of the winter months in a period of reflection and change. The grounding force in these works and in myself is nature. I remember in pictures of maple seeds, in the collection of oak leaves, antlers found in the forest, and mushrooms I studied on trees. I am trying to create something alive in these works, but they never will be. They mix together different worlds, ones where holes and unfamiliar structures sit with the ones you’d recognize. In each there are shadows, playing with the space and hinting at what is still missing. They look to the subconscious to try and understand where am I and what is my path forward.
