Graham Keenan
Photographer
I decided to buy a camera while I was recovering from a sudden heart attack back in the summer of 2008. I thought it was a perfect way to get up, move around and explore a bit of nature. I hadn’t touched a camera since graduating from The Ontario College of Art and Design in 1978. It was time to get reacquainted.
Over the years I learned the technical basics of photography from books and various fellow photographers. I produced photos that were focused and exposed properly but they felt lacking and in a sense clinical, like lab notations of different animal species. I recall asking myself why are there certain images I remember so vividly and why did they stay with me for so long? The answer seems simple enough now in retrospect. The photographs that made such a strong impression on me were the ones that I could connect with emotionally because the spirit of the animal was present in the photograph. That emotional connection is what I strive for through my photography.
