The Inspirations

Rachel Hardy + Heather Munro

Legend of the Skies, Rachel Hardy, 16 x 24 in, metal print $375.00

I wanted to capture a sense of wonder and significance to the aircraft in this image by dramatizing the contrast and keeping the work in a monochrome color palette. This choice also gives the work a vintage appearance, which suits the subjects’ historic part in the Royal Canadian Airforce.

Citrine Forest, Heather Munro

The forest path is a common theme in my work. As we see in so many fairytales forest paths evoke a feeling of wonder and sometimes danger. For this piece I focused on the colour of citrine and the play of the contrasting colours within the trees creating an imaginary landscape.

The Responses

Into the Woods, Rachel Hardy, 16 x 24 in, $500.00

In this response to my paired artist, I wanted to create a window into a dark but also colorful forest. I drew inspiration from the depth and color created through the layering of the drawing and the sense of awe implied by the solitary figure dwarfed by the trees.
I tried to capture a similar feeling by vignetting the edges of my photograph and making the autumn colors pop. I ensured to maintain the haze of a misty day as well as the textures of the trees, which was an important feature of my paired artist’s work that I sought to convey. I want the viewer to immerse themselves into the environment and look closely at all the features of the forest.

Cloud Monster

When looking at ‘Legend of the Skies’ I was drawn to the imagery and movement of the clouds. I noticed behind the planes there was a darker area that looked to me like a cloud monster poking his head out. I decided to emphasize the shape and move him to a new location overlooking a P.E.C field and barn.
