Jill Finney

My work as an expressive fine art photographer has emerged over the last 4 years. Much like the theme of the show, this period of my life has been marked by transformation and renewal. My personal and professional experiences and interests over the last 30 years are as varied as the scenes I photograph. I have an educational background in behavioural science, followed by professional experience in corporate sales. While raising my family, I pursued entrepreneurial ventures in both jewellery design and interior design. For 8 years, I worked with a design partner in building a successful interior design business in Toronto. After being diagnosed with a significant hearing impairment in 2020, I shifted to working full time on creating a fine art photography portfolio. As an emerging photographic artist, my CV is lacking in exhibitions and gallery credits. It is my hope that with this opportunity, I will begin to build relationships with artists in the County and surrounding area. My partner and I spend our free time at an off grid property, living in a yurt, on Amherst Island. Much of my photography has been created on the island and I am excited to continue photographing the landscape of the region.

My photography is a practice of noticing the transformative power of nature. The process of creating expressive imagery is an exercise in curiosity and self reflection that is deeply connected the theme of renewal. My work is an homage to the ever changing landscape, and it’s endless cycles of grown and change, both within myself and in the natural world. The work of capturing moments in time is a direct exploration of the concept of impermanence as seen through the lens of nature’s continuous deterioration and renewal.
